We transformed concrete into medals. Dozens of competitors hung them around their necks

Imagine someone hanging concrete around their neck. You’re probably wondering what kind of nonsense is this. The organisers of the Valachy Tour 2019 did exactly this. We made non-traditional concrete medals for them.

Glass, wood, metal … and concrete

The organisers came up with the idea of making concrete medals after having replaced various materials in previous years. Every year they think of what to make the medals from. In the past, race participants took home medals made from wood, glass, ceramics or metal. This time it was the turn of concrete that stood out most from these materials. After all, concrete medals aren’t normally distributed and therefore it’s a rarity that every competitor will be happy to exhibit at home. So, it seemed like a great idea. Once Tibor Mužík came up with the design, we began work.

How we made the medals

It may seem that creating dozens of concrete medals isn’t really that much work. But that’s not true. We made them from special concrete, which we developed specifically for these trophies. First, we made a casting and let it rest in the mould for a day. Then there was a series of grinding and the next 28 days the concrete rested to mature to its final form. We needed it to make sure the resulting material is strong and resistant. Eventually the medal was printed with the race print and the organisers decorated it with a red ribbon. These cool medals were born.

Memories in concrete

Each participant of the two-day triathlon received a concrete medal. We’re pleased that this time we were able to imprint memories into the concrete that remind every competitor of their enthusiasm and determination on the day of the competition. Good luck in sport!
